Black History Month Speaker Nikki Brown

Cultural attaché Miranda Patterson opened our series of events around Black History Month 2021 with a virtual talk and discussion with Nikki Brown. The talk has been streamed live on Facebook and was moderated by journalist Irene Brickner from the daily newspaper Der Standard. The theme of the virtual talk was African American Voter Engagement and Political Participation and the viewers could send in questions via Slido. Nikki Brown is a professor of History and African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky. Prior to this engagement, she was Director of Undergraduate Studies in History at the University of New Orleans. The major themes in her work include gender, race, identity, representation, and politics.

Dr. Brown is also a professional photographer and recently completed a project on African American men in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. She earned a PhD in History from Yale University.
