Demonstration Alert – U. S. Embassy Vienna (February 25-27, 2022)
Location: Announced gathering points include, but are not limited to, the following areas of Vienna:
- 6th District, Neubaugasse U-Bahn Station
- 1st District, Heldenplatz and Ring Road
Events:
- Friday, February 25 (beginning at 5:30 p.m.): Demonstrators will protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine at Neubaugasse U-Bahn station, near MariahilferStrasse shopping area and the Haus des Meeres aquarium. Expect pop-up demonstrations throughout the weekend related to the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
- Saturday, February 26 (1:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.): Demonstration against COVID-19 measures and mandatory vaccination policy, in Heldenplatz.
- Sunday, February 27 (11:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.): Demonstration against COVID-19 measures and mandatory vaccination policy. Protest will begin at Heldenplatz then march around the Ring Road. Expect major disruptions to traffic and public transportation in the vicinity.
Most demonstrations in Vienna are peaceful, orderly, and well-policed. However, all demonstrations and protests should be avoided as they are often unpredictable in nature. In addition to these registered demonstrations, flash protests are always possible.
Actions to take:
- Avoid the areas of demonstrations.
- Follow the instructions of authorities and road signs regarding closures and detours.
- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Keep a low profile.
