Disrupt, Deter, Re-Direct: Tackling Terrorism from the Ground Up

Dr. Anne Speckhard from the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism & Georgetown University and Dr. Ulrich Kropiunigg from Women Without Borders & Medical University of Vienna discussed the roots of extremism and shared best practices on how to integrate minority groups. After interviewing nearly 500 terrorists, and in the case of dead suicide terrorists, their close associates, family members and even hostages, Dr. Speckhard explained the ingredients of the “lethal cocktail of terrorism” and what puts an individual on the terrorist trajectory. She discussed with Dr. Kropiunigg how to prevent this, how to back someone off the terrorist trajectory as well as the use of hotlines, rapid intervention teams and prison deradicalization programs.
