Roundtable discussion at the Industriellenvereinigung

Last week, U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Marty Walsh visited Austria and learned more about apprenticeship best practices with a variety of government and industry leaders. This advanced the bilateral relationship based on the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in April 2022 to strengthen U.S. and Austrian apprenticeship cooperation.

Visiting Voest Alpine

Here are a few highlights from Secretary Walsh’s two-day visit:

✅ a tour of voestalpine’s training center, meeting with apprentices and management
✅ an exchange with management and a tour of some larger than life tractors at CNH Industrial
✅ a roundtable discussion at the Industriellenvereinigung with industry leaders
✅ a meeting with ÖGB President Wolfgang Katzian and Arbeiterkammer President Renate Anderl
✅ a tour of Schloss Schönbrunn
✅ and a visit with the UN Office of Drugs and Crime, to discuss the U.S. Department of Labor and UNODC – United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime efforts to end human trafficking

The U.S. is excited to learn from Austria’s experience to pave the way for more apprenticeship opportunities for its workers. “Expanding Registered Apprenticeships is crucial to creating high quality jobs in new and emerging industries. Building upon the U.S. and Austria MOU signing from last April to expand Registered Apprenticeship programs in both countries supports our commitment to build equitable pathways to the middle class.” – U.S. Secretary of Labor Walsh.
