OPEN TO: Austrian or other Non-U.S. Citizen students, ideally from within the European Union, with a valid permanent residence permit for Austria, who are enrolled as full-time students at one of the Universities or “Fachhochschulen” in Austria. Students must be at minimum 18 years of age.

MISSION: U.S. Embassy in Austria

SECTION/OFFICE: Political/Economic Section

HOURS: Upon agreement, usually not less than 20 hours per week

DURATION: Minimum two months, maximum four months

START DATE: Upon agreement, throughout the year

BASIC FUNCTION:

The United States Embassy in Austria consists of a multi-agency team with more than two-hundred staff members from the Department of State, as well as the Department of Defense, Department of Justice, and the Foreign Commercial Service, among others.

An internship with the Political/Economic section provides the opportunity to become familiar with the work of a bilateral diplomatic mission with regards to political and economic matters between the United States and Austria.  The intern provides staff assistance to foreign service officers in the combined political and economic sections.  Tasks may include longer-term analytical/research projects related to policy matters and developing analytical reports.  Internship responsibilities may additionally include, among other things, the following: drafting briefing memoranda and other reports for Embassy principals; accompanying officers to informal and official meetings; providing written and oral readouts of those events; and assisting in preparations for visits by U.S. officials.  The intern will also undertake some administrative tasks, such as answering phone calls, drafting responses to official correspondence, and serving as a point of contact for the section.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Studies: Major in one of the following University studies: Political Science; International Relations; Economics; Public Policy; or a related field.

Languages:  English & German: Fluency in speaking/reading/writing (equivalent to a good C1 level) is required.

Knowledge/Abilities/Skills: Good computer skills (MS Office, Internet)

SELECTION PROCESS:

After an initial application screening, qualified applicants will be invited for an interview.

  2. Successful candidates will be required to pass a security certification.
